Southern Pines offers a unique combination of small-town ambiance and big-city attractions. Working families, active duty military personnel, singles and retiree’s – all make up a diverse population. Many are escaping the urban sprawl for the tranquil lifestyle, outdoor activities, wonderful school system, and affordable cost of living found in Southern Pines.
The central geographical position in the state puts Southern Pines within easy driving distance to Charlotte, Fort Bragg and Fayetteville and the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill triangle. Or, a drive of a few hours can lead west to the majestic Appalachian Mountains or east to the beautiful Atlantic coastline.
The Southern Pines Parks and Recreation Department maintains five public parks with recreational and athletic facilities and a greenway trail system comprised of four greenways that stretch over more than five miles combined. The 165-acre Reservoir Park features a 95-acre lake and offers nature trails, fishing, boating, and picnic shelters. The park has a path around the lake that makes the Reservoir Park Southern Pines 3-mile course surrounding it a beautiful way to get some exercise. The path is open to bikers, runners, walkers, and even leashed dogs. Two large shelters with tables and grills are great for family gatherings and cookouts during the warmer months. The 18-hole, par 3 disc golf course is brand new and ready for play.
The nearby Walthour-Moss Foundation is a unique area comprised of 4,500 acres of longleaf pines, preserved specifically for the enjoyment of all equestrians. Southern Pines is often considered one of the premier areas for equestrian enthusiasts and is commonly known as “Horse Country”.
